Tranmere Rovers v Swansea City: Monk up for the cup

Swansea City manager Garry Monk has spoken of his love for the FA Cup ahead of Sunday s third-round trip to Tranmere Rovers.

City tackle the League Two strugglers on Sunday having enjoyed a fine start to their Premier League campaign.

Swansea, tipped as relegation favourites by some ahead of the season, are sitting a comfortable ninth in the table.

And the interruption of the Cup is a welcome one for traditionalist Monk, who is relishing the journey to Prenton Park.

Speaking about the FA Cup, he said: I love it. I ve been brought up watching it since I could walk.

It s a big tradition in this country and one of the best cup competitions in the world. It means a lot to me.

They ll be looking to play against a Premier League side and they …

Ronaldo: I still miss Manchester United

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo admits he misses former club Manchester United and still enjoys a good relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The winger spent six years at Old Trafford before switching to the Spanish giants for a record fee of 80 million pounds in 2009.

This season has seen the 27-year-old break his own record of 40 goals in La Liga and he clinched the winner in last weekend s El Clasico, putting Madrid in the driving seat for the title.

However, Ronaldo claims he still chats with former manager Ferguson and admits he misses the company of his old team-mates.

I speak with Sir Alex sometimes and of course I miss Manchester, Ronaldo told Zoo magazine.

It felt like I left a family back there because I spent six years with all tho…

Lampard: Chelsea squad can only be considered ´strong´ once we win something

Frank Lampard has again dismissed suggestions Chelsea have the strongest squad in the Premier League because his side have yet to win anything.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp labelled the Blues as favourites to win the title earlier this month on the back of a huge off-season spending spree totalling more than £200million.

Chelsea were top of the table at the time and unbeaten in 13 matches in all competitions, but they have since lost 1-0 to Everton to slip down to fifth, three points off the summit.

And Lampard is not buying into claims that he has the deepest squad in the division.

I just don t see it. I m not talking down my squad by saying that, he said.

Some of the people saying we have the strongest squad were the same people saying…

Longstaff flattered by Manchester United interest

Sean Longstaff has admitted to being flattered by interest from Manchester United following a whirlwind rise to prominence at Newcastle United.

The 21-year-old midfielder broke into the first team at St James Park in January and made nine promising Premier League appearances before a serious knee injury ended his breakthrough campaign.

Manchester United took note and are reportedly weighing up whether to meet Newcastle s lofty transfer demands.

For his part, midfielder Longstaff is content just to enjoy the ride as he sets out to impress new Magpies head coach Steve Bruce.

If somebody had said to me a year ago I would be in this position, I would probably have laughed at them, Longstaff told the Chronicle.

This time last year I was deciding whe…

Pedri gets ´deserved vacation´ after marathon first year with Barca

Pedri has belatedly been given a break from Barcelona duty after featuring in their first two matches of the 2021-22 season.

The Spain midfielder posted a picture from his aeroplane to social media as he headed back to his home in Tenerife.

Barca shared the image with the caption, deserved vacation .

Pedri will not play for the Blaugrana against Getafe next Sunday, while it remains to be seen if he will be called up by Luis Enrique for the subsequent international break.

Prediction: Crystal Palace vs Sheffield United

Sheffield United

Sheffield United enjoyed a wonderful campaign in 2019-20 and finished as high as ninth in the Premier League table. However, Chris Wilder’s side are having a torrid time at the moment and are in genuine danger of ending up back in the Championship at the end of the season.

The Blades currently find themselves at the foot of the Premier League table with two points from 16 matches. The Yorkshire club have lost their last two league fixtures 1-0 and are desperate for a win at the moment. Things are desperate for United, who cannot score goals and are shipping in far too many for their liking.

Salah: There will be ´fire´ if I speak after Klopp clash

Mohamed Salah refused to talk to the media following a touchline clash with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, saying there would be fire if he spoke.

Liverpool s Premier League title hopes are hanging by a thread following a 2-2 draw at West Ham on Saturday, and much of the discussion after the game centered on a flare-up between Salah and Klopp in the latter stages of the contest.

Salah, dropped from the starting XI for the visit to the London Stadium, was involved in a furious confrontation with Klopp prior to being substituted on, with the pair having to be separated by Joe Gomez and Darwin Nunez.

Following the game, Salah made a comment as he walked through the media area, refusing to conduct interviews with the press.

If I speak today there will be fire,…

Don´t focus on Son – South Korea boss Bento

South Korea coach Paulo Bento was pleased with his side’s performance in their goalless draw with Uruguay and urged supporters not to focus too much on the fitness of star striker Son Heung-min.

Tottenham forward Son’s availability was in doubt until just before kick-off due to a fractured eye socket sustained earlier this month but – aided by a facemask – he played the full game, producing occasional flashes in a largely subdued display.

His ineffectiveness was replicated by the other attacking stars on show – Uruguay’s strikeforce of Darwin Nunez and Luis Suarez also failing to make any meaningful impact in a drab encounter in World Cup Group H.

Uruguay came closest to finding a winner with both Diego Godin and Federico Valverde hitting the woodwork…

Jurgen Klopp rules out Premier League job

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has revealed he is no longer dreaming about a Premier League job.

The highly rated tactician led the German giants to a 1-1 Champions League draw at Etihad Stadium last night, with BVB very unfortunate not to have taken all three points.

Klopp was linked with Liverpool job in the summer after he had revealed his dream of managing a Premier League club, but the German coach now admits things have changed.

“I think the paradise of football is actually the German Bundesliga,” Klopp was quoted as saying in Bild.

”We have the most competitive and the most attractive league in Europe. It’s the league with the tightest competition and with the best stadiums. The fans are great.

“Of course, England may be cl…

Alderweireld staying put in Netherlands

Toby Alderweireld said he has no intention to leave Ajax any time soon as he feels he is not ready yet to make the move abroad.

The Belgium international, 23, has recently been linked with Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, but he is happy to remain at the Eredivisie champions for the foreseeable future.

Thomas Vermaelen was almost 24 when he left Ajax for Arsenal, while Jan Vertonghen is two years older than I am, and has only just left, Alderweireld told Elf Voetbal.

So if I d follow in their footsteps, I would not leave Ajax in the upcoming summer, but in the year after that. I still have plenty of time to further develop and follow the same path as them.

Alderweireld, who has a contract until June 2014, has made over 100 …
